Surrealism in photographic arts

My Take on Surrealism

Generally defined as works of art that include the juxtaposition of distant realities to activate the subconscious mind. Unnerving, illogical scenes that include contradictory, disparate elements that can only exist in the imagination of both the artist and the viewer.

In each of my images I first aim to make a statement to either describe the human condition or to be humorous in a twisted sort of way. Once I determine what the image is to represent, I search my library of images for items that will fit the narrative. When I am out shooting I. in addition to straight photography, I photograph items and scenes knowing that what I capture will ultimately be disassembled. In this way my images evolve using pieces from my photographs to augment atmosphere all to stimulate the viewers’ imaginations.

In my Polymorphics series, I make 3D images to create a sense of time or motion on a two-dimensional medium, much like the Cubists did. In my portrayal I place the subjects in such that they repeat but logic tells us that they can’t occupy the same place simultaneously, so the subject must have moved, or that’s what logic would tell us.
